Dec 17

I know I am not the first or only person to say this this holiday season and it has been said by many every Christmas time since 1987 but I still need to acknowledge Fairytale of New York by The Pouges as one of the best Christmas songs ever.

The song is all at once sad, desperate and cynical, yet somehow tenderness shines through the entire song. Not the postcard, holiday-special tenderness usually associated with Christmas but a more gritty yet honest tenderness. One that is complex, often sad and can resonate with pain.

There is no sarcasm or irony to this post. I truly love this song. It never fails to get me in the Christmas spirit or make me home sick for New York.

Be sure to look at the cop in the police station scene.  Recognize the actor?
